Instruments That Remember I-V

Project type

Mixed-media

Date

January 2026

Location

Chicago, IL

Size

Oil paint on wood panel, 8x8 in

This series treats instruments as witnesses—and recordings as proof. Each 8x8 in wood panel centers a physical cassette tape affixed to the surface, painted over and integrated into the composition. Radiating outward, a single instrument—banjo, saxophone, guitar, drum, or tambourine—emerges in explosive, electric color, while the background remains restrained in black and white.

By removing the performer, Instruments That Remember asks the viewer to consider what these objects have absorbed and preserved: struggle, joy, resistance, improvisation. The cassette becomes a symbol of captured time—of sound archived, replayed, and passed hand to hand. Together, each piece functions as a small but potent monument to Black music as memory, technology, and survival.
