A Contemporary Speakeasy Series
Velvet Juke: The Smoke & Honey Sessions is a contemporary visual journey into the soul of the juke joint—where music, movement, Blackness, sensuality, and storytelling occupy the same room.
Rooted in the atmosphere of the traditional speakeasy and reimagined through a modern Black lens, the series explores the relationship between sound and body, rhythm and presence, intimacy and power.
Smoke represents spirit—the intangible energy that lingers long after the music stops. Honey represents the body—rich, sensual, unapologetic, and undeniably alive. Velvet speaks to texture, luxury, and touch. And Juke is the rhythm that brings everything together.
The series unfolds through three figures:
The Piano Player — March 2026
The one who sets the tone. Their hands establish the rhythm, creating the atmosphere for everything that follows.
The Singer — April 2026
She commands the light fully aware of her power. Deep brown, full-bodied and grounded, she embodies the richness of Black womanhood without apology. She doesn't enter the room seeking permission to be seen—her presence changes the room simply because she is there.
The Dancers — May 2026
Movement becomes the language. Two bodies caught somewhere between music and memory, surrender and celebration, carrying the rhythm of a room that has finally come alive.
Together, these works create a world where the juke joint becomes more than a setting. It becomes a state of being—a place where Black bodies are celebrated, music becomes visible, and sensuality exists without explanation.
Velvet Juke is about the moment before the song ends.
The smoke hangs in the air.
The honey lingers on the tongue.
The rhythm moves through the body.
And the room is alive.
Welcome to the Smoke & Honey Sessions.
